Geico vs Progressive, Fight!
I’ve been a Geico customer for about 8 years now. I originally picked them because I was in the dealership trying to lease an Acura Integra (my first new car) and was informed that I had to have car insurance before I could leave. This was new to me, so I chose Geico because I could remember their phone number at the time.
Caitlin and I have been talking about getting her a new car for a few months, and we went to look at Subaru’s today and kind of decided we probably want to get an Outback, so I called Geico and asked them for a quote on this one.
With just my 2000 A4 on my insurance, I had been paying about $450ish/6 months. The woman at Geico seemed confused by the VIN number from the Subaru, telling me that it was “too new”, which struck me as odd, since Subaru has probably been selling them for a few months now. To make a long story short, after asking me a bunch of questions about features of the car, she told me it would be $898/6mo. Yow.
I decided real quick I needed to at least make a token effort to look around, and tried Progressive first just for the hell of it. They quoted me $344/mo for just the A4 and $541/mo for the Outback and A4. Huge difference.
I also checked State Farm (more than Geico), and was going to check AAA at the recommendation of a friend, but they don’t have an online quoting thing, and I wasn’t going to screw around with it.
I’ve always been really happy with Geico’s customer service. However, I’ve also never had to file a claim and I’ve got a clean driving record, so I’m switching to Progressive as of tonight. Online reviews lead me to believe their customer service isn’t quite as good, but I think I’m willing to put up with more sucky customer service for >$700 less per year in car insurance.
